The Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills
(BICS) and Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP) are two types of language learning. BICS and CALP are terms introduced by Jim Cummins (1979).
- CLIL students need to know content-specific vocabulary for the topic they are learning.
- CLIL students need to learn the language they will need to carry out activities during the lesson.
- CLIL students learn the sort of language which helps them organise their thoughts and solve problems.
This sort of language learning is called CALP.
